R. Krasburg and Sons Manufacturing Co.
State: Illinois
Location: Chicago
Time Period: 1944
Facility Type: Atomic Weapons Employer
Facility Description: In 1944, R. Krasberg entered into a subcontract with the University of Chicago for services and supplies for the Metallurgical Laboratory. The subcontract required Krasberg to provide necessary personnel, facilities and equipment to produce special machining of parts for special equipment, tools, jigs, fixtures, etc., from materials furnished by the University. It is unclear from the documentation whether Krasberg handled any radioactive materials as part of its work.
*DISCUSSION:
The contract reviewed specified Krasberg to provide necessary personnel, facilities and equipment to produce special machining of parts for special equipment, tools, jigs, fixtures, etc. There is no indication that radioactive material was handled at this site. A radiological survey of the facility conducted by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) did not identify any radioactive contamination at the facility above the levels specified in 10 CFR 835. Exposure rates in the facility were well within the range typically considered background levels. The facility was removed from FUSRAP status in late 1989.
