Facility Description: From 1943 to 1986, Battelle Memorial Institute performed atomic energy research and development as well as beryllium work for the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies. The Battelle Laboratories have two separate locations in Columbus – King Avenue and West Jefferson. Battelle’s research supported the government’s fuel and target fabrication program, including fabrication of uranium and fuel elements, reactor development, submarine propulsion, fuel reprocessing, and the safe use of reactor vessels and piping.
The following activities were performed at the King Avenue location: processing and machining enriched, natural, and depleted uranium and thorium; fabricating fuel elements; analyzing radiochemicals; and studying power metallurgy. Beryllium work was conducted from 1943 until at least 1961.

History:
Battelle Laboratories – King Avenue is located in Columbus, Ohio. In April 1943, an initial contract was made with Manhattan Engineering District to begin fabrication, rolling, forging, and extrusion of uranium metal. In addition, forging of thorium was also carried out. Both processes occurred from the mid-1940’s until the early 1950’s. The facility was also involved in research to obtain uranium and thorium from phosphate ores and monazite sands. Early processing and research was carried out with no radiation detection equipment and the facility was not equipped to handle radioactivity. It wasn’t until 1951 that external monitoring devices were provided for certain employees and 1955 until internal monitoring bioassays were carried out.
Battelle Laboratories on King Avenue continues to carry out research and development today and is one facility of the Battelle Memorial Institute with facilities around the world. The Institute was founded in 1929 by the family of the steel industrialist, Gordon Battelle. This not-for-profit is one of the world’s largest research and development organizations in its own right and also manages four Department of Energy-sponsored laboratories – Brookhaven, Oak Ridge, Idaho, and Pacific Northwest Laboratories.

The Battelle Laboratories have two separate locations in Columbus: King Avenue and West Jefferson. Battelle’s research supported the government’s fuel and target fabrication program, including fabrication of uranium and fuel elements, reactor development, submarine propulsion, fuel reprocessing, and the safe e of reactor vessels and piping. The following activities were performed at the King Avenue site: processing and machining enriched, natural, and depleted uranium and thorium; fabricating fuel elements; analyzing radiochemicals; and studying power metallurgy. The following activities were performed at the West Jefferson site: operation of a large hot cell facility and a research reactor. Reactor operations began in October 1956, and ended in December 1974. The reactor was defueled and partially dismantled in 1975 and Battelle’s license was changed to possession-only status.
